About Resource Centre for Alternate Media and Assistive Technology

Overview of the Centre

The Centre operated from the Department of Arts and Social Science Education (DASSE) and later moved to the then Department of Educational Foundations.

In 2012, a Disability Policy for UCC was drafted and the name was changed to Resource Centre for Alternative Media and Assistive Technology (R-CAMAT). This was necessitated to bring all students with disabilities together and provide them equal access to quality education. However, this was also later deemed as narrow and could not cover the entirety of disabilities. It was therefore, changed in 2020, to Centre for Persons With Special Needs to cater for all manner of students and staff and visitors with learning disabilities.

Over the years, the University has addressed the needs of an increasingly more diverse population of students with disabilities (Visually Impaired, Physically Challenged and Hearing impairment). There has been consistent increase in the enrolment over the years though very slowly. The University has continuously enhanced its' academic support for students with disabilities to increase their educational achievement.
